UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage and Important Intangible Cultural Heritage Nos. 56 and 1

2010 International Cultural Event Jongmyo Grand Festival

The Jongmyo Daeje Festival, co-hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Korea Cultural Heritage Protection Foundation and organized by the Jongmyo Daejebong Committee (Jongmyo Jerye Preservation Society and Jongmyo Jeryeak Preservation Society), will be held at Jongmyo on May 2, 2010.

Jongmyo Daeje, which was selected as a UNESCO-designated intangible cultural heritage in May 2001, is a national ritual held at Jongmyo, a world heritage site, and is a rare traditional ritual in the world where you can enjoy tangible and intangible world heritage together.

Jongmyo Ritual is a memorial service for kings and queens in the history of the Joseon Dynasty and is called Jongmyo Daeje because it was the largest and most important event of the Joseon Dynasty.

Originally, it was held at the beginning of the first month of the four seasons in Chunha-chu-dong and five times a year in December, but now it is only held on the first Sunday of May.

Jongmyo Daeje is a comprehensive ritual of music, dance, and rituals that combines Jongmyo Jeryeak and Ilmu along with Jongmyo Jerye, and is said to be the essence of Korean traditional art.

The Jongmyo Grand Festival will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 11:20 a.m. to 12:20 a.m., followed by the Eoga Procession leading to Gyeongbokgung → Sejong-ro → Sejong-ro Intersection → Jongro 1,2,3ga → Jongmyo (Jonggung), and Jeongjeon Jehyang from 1 p.m.
